After years of searching for relief from Bartonella and Babesia, I found Water’s Edge Wellness. My story begins two years ago when I was bitten by a tick. I was experiencing symptoms similar to a heart attack. IGeneX testing confirmed this and I was put on four different antibiotics for a year. At the same time my children were also showing signs of Lyme Disease including anxiety, heart palpitations, an inability to focus mentally, and breathlessness. I learned about Nancy Angelini and have been completely symptom free now that I am three months into my weekly, all natural treatments. My daughters are also on the road to recovery and we owe it all to Water’s Edge Wellness.

Water’s Edge Wellness has been helpful with not only relieving my pain but also with educating me on prevention and corrective ways to take care of myself from head-to-toe. The environment at Water’s Edge Wellness is so peaceful, it is like taking a vacation from the stress of everyday life. My shoulder and back muscles were very tight from a previous neck injury and my friend recommended the services of Nancy Angelini to help with my pain. If you are looking for results, I would recommend Nancy Angelini at Water’s Edge Wellness.

It is with great pleasure that I share the sense of blessing I have for being in Nancy’s care…I had been on a downward spiral for years and did not understand the myriad of symptoms that plagued me…Despite my efforts to find answers in the traditional medical community the answers I was provided with were just temporary band-aids. I was right on target with what Nancy had predicted in terms of my turn around time. I still have a short way to go with treatment but have very high expectations for my life ahead. Thank you Nancy for what you do and for the care you have in doing it.

The improvements in my overall health have been very significant to me. What is remarkable is that I have only been your client for a mere 9 weeks. Since adopting your carefully designed and customized protocol I noticed my health started to improve just days into the program. I believe you have a very unique gift and your truly holistic approach to healing the body is magnificent. I haven’t felt this healthy, this vibrant since well before my bout with cancer over 20 years ago.

I met Nancy at a time when I was abandoned and left for dead by traditional western medical practices when my chronic Lyme Disease had been dismissed by every specialty I sought care from. I was so incredibly broken and every system in my body had begun to fail from a decade of missed tick born illness and total body toxicity burden. Nancy’s heartfelt approach and careful consideration of my case has saved my life. After partnering with her for a year I am well on my way to recovery from chronic illness and I owe it all to Nancy’s knowledge, compassion and tireless commitment to my improvement.

I started with Nancy in June of 2019 after having a knee replacement. Nancy helped me get more range and also made my scar look 100% better using cupping, moxa and topical herbal poultices as well as deep massage. I am still with her today as I had guillain barre in 2006. Nancy guided me through nutrition and herbs that played a big part in my recovery. Water’s Edge Wellness also has an HBOT (Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy) machine and I use it as often as I can. It helps me manage my symptoms.
Nancy is so kind, she really wants you to get better. She does not judge your past bad habits. To me, Nancy is brilliant and has an abundance of knowledge. She is very dedicated and passionate about her work. I enjoy going to her office and plan on seeing her for years to come.

Understanding intestinal permeability-commonly called "leaky gut"-starts with recognizing that your digestive tract is far more than a simple food processor. Think of your gut lining as a selective barrier, much like a security checkpoint that allows beneficial nutrients through while blocking harmful substances. When this barrier becomes compromised, undigested food particles, bacteria, and toxins can pass into your bloodstream, triggering inflammation throughout your body. If you're searching for ways to heal leaky gut naturally in Newburyport MA and the surrounding North Shore communities of Essex County, Massachusetts, you're not alone. Many residents are discovering that evidence-based natural approaches can restore digestive integrity and resolve chronic symptoms that conventional medicine often overlooks.
Sarah, a 48-year-old from the Boxford area, came to Waters Edge Wellness exhausted and frustrated. For three years, she'd struggled with bloating after nearly every meal, chronic fatigue that made afternoons unbearable, and a growing list of food sensitivities that seemed to appear monthly. She'd seen three different gastroenterologists, taken various medications, and tried elimination diets on her own-yet nothing provided lasting relief. Her conventional doctors had tested for obvious conditions like celiac disease and inflammatory bowel disease, both negative, and essentially told her to "manage her symptoms."
What Sarah didn't understand was that her symptoms pointed to intestinal hyperpermeability. The constant inflammation, food reactions, and systemic fatigue are hallmark signs that the tight junctions holding her gut cells together had become compromised. She was experiencing what many health-conscious adults in their 40s and 50s face: a gradual breakdown of digestive function that leads to autoimmune activation, nutrient malabsorption, and a cascade of seemingly unrelated health problems.
At Waters Edge Wellness, our practitioners take a fundamentally different approach to leaky gut than conventional gastroenterology. Rather than treating symptoms in isolation, we conduct a comprehensive functional assessment to identify what triggered the barrier dysfunction in the first place. Common culprits include chronic stress, dysbiosis (imbalance in gut bacteria), food sensitivities, nutrient deficiencies, and intestinal inflammation from various triggers.
For Sarah, the assessment revealed several interconnected issues:
The natural approach to heal leaky gut naturally in Newburyport MA and surrounding communities involves what we call the "Four Rs" framework: Remove, Replace, Repair, and Rebalance.
Remove: We identified and eliminated inflammatory triggers-in Sarah's case, gluten and high-histamine foods-while supporting her natural detoxification pathways through strategic nutritional counseling. This isn't about restriction forever; it's about creating an environment where healing can occur.
Replace: We restored digestive capacity by supporting stomach acid production and enzyme function. Many adults with leaky gut have compromised digestive efficiency, which perpetuates the cycle of malabsorption and intestinal stress.
Repair: We provided targeted nutritional support specifically designed to rebuild the intestinal lining. Compounds like L-glutamine (an amino acid that serves as fuel for intestinal cells), bone broth minerals, slippery elm, and zinc became foundations of Sarah's protocol. These aren't random supplements; they're evidence-based interventions chosen because they directly support the biological structures that were damaged.
Rebalance: We reintroduced beneficial bacteria through strategic probiotic supplementation and fermented foods, combined with prebiotic fibers that nourish these protective organisms. We also addressed her stress response through nutritional support for her nervous system, recognizing that the gut-brain connection runs both directions.
Sarah's protocol was tailored specifically to her needs, but it followed the evidence-based framework that practitioners at Waters Edge Wellness in Boxford and throughout Essex County use for intestinal permeability:
The key insight many people miss: healing a compromised intestinal barrier requires time and patience. The intestinal lining completely replaces itself approximately every 3-5 days, but true barrier restoration typically requires 12-16 weeks of consistent, targeted support. This is why sustainable approaches that address root causes work so much better than quick fixes.
After three months of following this natural protocol, Sarah's transformation was remarkable. Her bloating resolved dramatically-she could now eat a complete meal without distension or discomfort. Her energy returned to levels she hadn't experienced in years; she no longer needed afternoon naps and felt genuinely vital again. Most importantly, her food sensitivities had normalized. She could reintroduce foods that had previously triggered reactions, not because she was ignoring her sensitivities, but because her intestinal barrier was now functioning properly.
By month four, Sarah's gastroenterologist (when she mentioned her improvement) acknowledged that her symptoms had resolved completely. The inflammation markers in her follow-up testing had normalized. She'd moved from a place of frustration and resignation to genuine wellness-not through suppressive medications, but through understanding her body's needs and addressing them with precision.
Sarah's experience reflects what we see consistently at Waters Edge Wellness for clients throughout Newburyport, Boxford, and the broader North Shore communities. When leaky gut is approached holistically-addressing diet, microbiome health, nutrient status, stress, and lifestyle factors-the body's remarkable capacity to heal itself becomes apparent.
The fundamental difference between natural functional approaches and conventional symptom management is this: suppressive medications mask the problem while the underlying damage continues, whereas targeted natural interventions support your body's actual healing processes. Because your intestinal lining is metabolically active and constantly renewing, providing it with the specific nutrients, bacterial support, and inflammatory reduction it needs allows true restoration to occur.
If you're experiencing chronic digestive dysfunction, unexplained food sensitivities, persistent fatigue, or autoimmune symptoms, your gut barrier integrity may be compromised. Waters Edge Wellness offers comprehensive holistic health consultation and personalized functional medicine protocols designed to identify and address root causes. Whether you're in Newburyport, Danvers, Salem, or anywhere across Essex County, our evidence-based natural approach has helped many discover that healing leaky gut naturally isn't just possible-it's the most sustainable path to lasting wellness.
Common signs include chronic bloating, digestive discomfort after eating, food sensitivities that developed gradually, unexplained fatigue, joint pain, brain fog, and skin issues like eczema or acne. If you experience multiple symptoms across different body systems that conventional testing can't explain, intestinal permeability may be the underlying connection. A comprehensive functional assessment at Waters Edge Wellness can help identify whether barrier dysfunction is driving your symptoms.
Most people see significant improvement within 8-12 weeks of following a targeted protocol, though complete intestinal barrier restoration typically requires 12-16 weeks of consistent implementation. The timeline depends on severity, how long the condition existed, and how closely you follow the personalized recommendations. Some people notice energy and digestive improvements within 2-3 weeks, while food sensitivities may take longer to fully resolve.
Temporary elimination of inflammatory trigger foods is typically necessary to reduce intestinal inflammation enough for healing to occur, but this is not meant to be permanent. The goal is to identify true sensitivities versus temporary reactivity, then gradually reintroduce foods as your barrier heals. Working with a practitioner ensures you're eliminating only what's necessary and reintroducing foods strategically based on your individual tolerance.
While a foundational diet of whole, nutrient-dense foods is essential, targeted supplementation significantly accelerates healing by providing concentrated amounts of repair nutrients your body cannot obtain from food alone in sufficient quantities. Specific amino acids, minerals, and bacterial support address the biochemical damage directly. A functional medicine practitioner determines which supplements your individual situation requires rather than recommending a generic protocol.
