After years of searching for relief from Bartonella and Babesia, I found Water’s Edge Wellness. My story begins two years ago when I was bitten by a tick. I was experiencing symptoms similar to a heart attack. IGeneX testing confirmed this and I was put on four different antibiotics for a year. At the same time my children were also showing signs of Lyme Disease including anxiety, heart palpitations, an inability to focus mentally, and breathlessness. I learned about Nancy Angelini and have been completely symptom free now that I am three months into my weekly, all natural treatments. My daughters are also on the road to recovery and we owe it all to Water’s Edge Wellness.

Water’s Edge Wellness has been helpful with not only relieving my pain but also with educating me on prevention and corrective ways to take care of myself from head-to-toe. The environment at Water’s Edge Wellness is so peaceful, it is like taking a vacation from the stress of everyday life. My shoulder and back muscles were very tight from a previous neck injury and my friend recommended the services of Nancy Angelini to help with my pain. If you are looking for results, I would recommend Nancy Angelini at Water’s Edge Wellness.

It is with great pleasure that I share the sense of blessing I have for being in Nancy’s care…I had been on a downward spiral for years and did not understand the myriad of symptoms that plagued me…Despite my efforts to find answers in the traditional medical community the answers I was provided with were just temporary band-aids. I was right on target with what Nancy had predicted in terms of my turn around time. I still have a short way to go with treatment but have very high expectations for my life ahead. Thank you Nancy for what you do and for the care you have in doing it.

The improvements in my overall health have been very significant to me. What is remarkable is that I have only been your client for a mere 9 weeks. Since adopting your carefully designed and customized protocol I noticed my health started to improve just days into the program. I believe you have a very unique gift and your truly holistic approach to healing the body is magnificent. I haven’t felt this healthy, this vibrant since well before my bout with cancer over 20 years ago.

I met Nancy at a time when I was abandoned and left for dead by traditional western medical practices when my chronic Lyme Disease had been dismissed by every specialty I sought care from. I was so incredibly broken and every system in my body had begun to fail from a decade of missed tick born illness and total body toxicity burden. Nancy’s heartfelt approach and careful consideration of my case has saved my life. After partnering with her for a year I am well on my way to recovery from chronic illness and I owe it all to Nancy’s knowledge, compassion and tireless commitment to my improvement.

I started with Nancy in June of 2019 after having a knee replacement. Nancy helped me get more range and also made my scar look 100% better using cupping, moxa and topical herbal poultices as well as deep massage. I am still with her today as I had guillain barre in 2006. Nancy guided me through nutrition and herbs that played a big part in my recovery. Water’s Edge Wellness also has an HBOT (Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy) machine and I use it as often as I can. It helps me manage my symptoms.
Nancy is so kind, she really wants you to get better. She does not judge your past bad habits. To me, Nancy is brilliant and has an abundance of knowledge. She is very dedicated and passionate about her work. I enjoy going to her office and plan on seeing her for years to come.

Sarah, a 42-year-old marketing director from Somerville, had spent three years managing persistent digestive dysfunction. Bloating, brain fog, and unpredictable food sensitivities dominated her daily experience. She'd undergone standard gastroenterology testing that revealed nothing conclusive, leaving her frustrated and searching for answers. When her conventional doctor suggested long-term medication management without addressing root causes, she began exploring natural approaches to heal leaky gut naturally in Somerville, MA and the surrounding North Shore communities.
Intestinal permeability-commonly called leaky gut-occurs when the tight junctions between epithelial cells weaken, allowing partially digested food particles and bacterial metabolites to cross the intestinal barrier. This triggers immune activation and systemic inflammation. The conventional medical model often treats the symptoms (bloating, fatigue) rather than investigating what caused the barrier dysfunction in the first place. Sarah's experience reflected a growing pattern: many adults in Essex County, Massachusetts experience gut dysfunction but lack access to practitioners who investigate the underlying mechanisms.
Sarah scheduled a consultation at Waters Edge Wellness in Boxford, MA, where the practitioners take an evidence-based functional medicine approach. Rather than assuming her symptoms required pharmaceutical intervention, the initial assessment examined multiple contributing factors:
When comparing conventional gastroenterology to functional medicine assessment, the analytical difference centers on philosophy: conventional medicine asks "What disease do you have?" while functional medicine asks "What systems are dysregulated?" The data from Sarah's microbiome analysis revealed dysbiosis-a significant reduction in beneficial bacteria like Faecalibacterium prausnitzii, a short-chain fatty acid producer essential for intestinal barrier integrity. Additionally, her nutrient panel showed suboptimal zinc and vitamin D levels, both critical for tight junction protein synthesis and immune regulation.
The healing of leaky gut naturally requires addressing not just symptoms but the specific dysregulation patterns unique to each person-diet, microbiome health, nutrient status, and stress management work synergistically.
Her practitioner also identified a pattern of chronic psychological stress correlating with her symptom flares, suggesting that her hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis dysregulation was perpetuating intestinal hyperpermeability through altered mucus layer production and reduced secretory IgA (the immune system's first line of defense in the gut).
The treatment plan to heal leaky gut naturally combined evidence-based natural medicine with behavioral modifications. Waters Edge Wellness practitioners designed an intervention addressing each identified dysregulation:
Across the North Shore communities in Essex County, Massachusetts, many practitioners offer isolated interventions. Waters Edge Wellness distinguished itself through systematic reassessment-microbiome testing repeated at 6-week and 12-week intervals to objectively measure dysbiosis correction. Sarah's compliance with the protocol was monitored through regular coaching sessions that addressed both practical implementation and psychological factors affecting adherence.
Over a 16-week period, Sarah's symptoms resolved progressively. By week 8, her bloating decreased substantially and mental clarity returned. Repeat microbiome analysis showed restoration of beneficial bacteria populations and increased short-chain fatty acid producers. Her nutrient levels normalized through both dietary changes and supplementation. By week 16, she reintroduced previously problematic foods without symptoms-not because she had eliminated the foods permanently, but because her intestinal barrier had truly healed.
The analytical outcome reveals what the research literature supports: leaky gut requires multi-system intervention rather than single-target treatment. Sarah maintained her gains through an ongoing wellness protocol that emphasized dietary consistency, stress management, and periodic reassessment. She shifted from reactive symptom management to proactive health optimization, understanding now which foods, stress levels, and lifestyle factors trigger her individual dysregulation patterns.
This case exemplifies the Waters Edge Wellness methodology available to residents throughout Boxford and surrounding communities: investigation before intervention, measurement before and after treatment, and personalized protocols addressing each person's unique physiological pattern. For those exploring how to heal leaky gut naturally in Somerville, MA and the greater North Shore region, evidence-based functional medicine offers a comprehensive alternative to symptomatic management alone.
Timeline varies based on severity and contributing factors, but most people experience measurable improvements in 6 to 12 weeks when following a comprehensive protocol that addresses diet, microbiome health, nutrient status, and stress management. Complete healing of intestinal barrier integrity typically requires 12 to 16 weeks with consistent adherence to evidence-based interventions. Individual variation depends on factors like duration of dysbiosis, nutritional deficiencies, and baseline stress levels.
Common inflammatory triggers include gluten, refined carbohydrates, processed foods, and high-histamine items, though individual sensitivities vary significantly. Rather than eliminating foods permanently based on general recommendations, a systematic elimination and reintroduction protocol under professional guidance identifies your specific triggers. This personalized approach prevents unnecessary dietary restriction while identifying the foods your individual gut responds to negatively.
Targeted supplementation addresses specific dysregulation patterns identified through functional testing-nutrients like L-glutamine, zinc carnosine, and bone broth protein provide structural building blocks for intestinal barrier repair when combined with dietary changes and stress management. The evidence suggests supplementation works most effectively as part of a comprehensive protocol rather than as a standalone intervention, which is why professional assessment and ongoing reassessment matter for meaningful healing.
