After working in the Onhold Messaging industry for a couple of years I saw many different phone systems, and I saw many frustrated people. Traditional business phone systems are based around a Private Branch Exchange (PBX) or Key System (KSU) where the business hosts the System and subscribes to a service from the local telephone company. The local telephone company routes the calls from their central office to their proper destination.
Modern Technology has made these traditional methodologies almost extinct in both the consumer and business arenas. In the 1990s when the Internet began to take off there began to be an increased understanding of packet switching. Companies needed packet switched networks for data, so using them for telephone calls was tempting, and the availability of the Internet as a global delivery system made packet switched communications even more attractive. These factors led to the development of theVoIP.
I really had no clue about VOIP until I got into the Onhold Messaging business. I had owned my first business in the early 2000s and paid an obnoxious amount of money to have two phone lines and a fax line that ran through MediaCom. I look back now at how much I was paying and just laugh at the ridiculous amount of money that was wasted.
